The renowned Nigerian musician, broadcaster, actor, politician, and activist Onyeka Onwenu, affectionately known as the “Elegant Stallion,” was laid to rest in a deeply emotional ceremony in Lagos. Onwenu, who passed away on July 30, 2024, at the age of 72, succumbed to injuries sustained from a fall during an event honoring Dr. Stella Okoli, Managing Director of Emzor Pharmaceuticals.
The incident occurred at Reddington Hospital in Ikeja, where Onwenu was later pronounced dead. Her funeral service took place at The Fountain of Life Church in Ilupeju, Lagos. Following the service, she was interred in a private ceremony at a mausoleum in Ikoyi. The ceremony was attended by notable figures, including former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti.

Onwenu is survived by her two sons, Abraham and Tijani Ogunlende, who have shared their grief in a statement released on Wednesday, July 31. They revealed that their mother was rushed to the hospital after delivering a memorable performance. Despite the medical team’s efforts, she passed away due to her injuries.
In their statement, her sons described Onwenu as a “national treasure, an icon and legend,” acknowledging her profound impact on multiple generations through her music, acting, philanthropy, and humanitarian efforts. They expressed gratitude to those who supported her during her final moments and thanked individuals including Peter Obi, John Momoh, and others who were present.
The statement read: “It is with heavy hearts that I and my brother wish to announce the passing of our mother, the much-loved Onyeka Onwenu. She passed away last night, Tuesday, July 30, 2024, in Lagos, Nigeria. She was rushed to the hospital after an amazing last performance, where doctors made every effort to save her life… sadly she passed.”
The family also extended their thanks to Reddington Hospital and its staff for their efforts and expressed appreciation for the support received from the public and notable figures. They asked everyone to remember and celebrate the impactful life of Onyeka Onwenu as they make the necessary plans.
