Liverpool manager Arne Slot has suggested that new signing Federico Chiesa may have to wait before making his debut for the club, following the Italy forward’s arrival ahead of the upcoming match against Manchester United on Sunday.
Chiesa, who joined Liverpool from Juventus on a long-term deal, became the club’s first major signing since the end of last season. His arrival adds significant attacking prowess to Liverpool’s squad, but Slot is not optimistic about Chiesa being included in the squad for the highly anticipated fixture at Old Trafford.
Slot addressed the media on Friday, revealing that Chiesa will join the team’s training sessions but may not be ready for the match against United. “Chiesa is going to train with us today. There’s a bigger chance that he’s not in the squad,” Slot explained. He added, “If injuries might come up in the next two days, we might need him, but I don’t expect him to be in, but I cannot guarantee it.”
The 26-year-old Chiesa, who has faced challenges with injuries, including an anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered in January 2022, had a productive season with Juventus last year, making 37 appearances and scoring 10 goals. He also showcased his abilities with Italy at Euro 2024.
Despite his impressive credentials, Slot acknowledged that Chiesa might need some time to adapt to Liverpool’s environment. “If we sign someone that can help us achieve our goals and improve the squad, we’re excited to have brought him in,” Slot stated. He further emphasized the importance of Chiesa aligning with the team’s culture and work ethic. “One of the best things of working here, I’ve noticed, is the culture of this team. They work really hard to try and achieve their goals, and I think that’s really important that the first player you bring in has that same attitude and the same culture,” Slot added.
As Liverpool prepares for their clash with Manchester United, Slot’s comments highlight the potential delay in Chiesa’s integration into the squad, while also underscoring the club’s commitment to maintaining a strong team culture.
