In the latest escalation of violence, insurgents attacked a vigilante camp in Buni Yadi, the administrative center of Gujba Local Government Area, Yobe State, just days after a devastating attack that left at least 34 people dead.
According to a report by Daily Trust on Thursday, the assault targeted the vigilante camp located at Sabon Fegi, near the government lodge and adjacent to the local government secretariat. The insurgents, who arrived on foot, set fire to parts of the local government lodge and torched two vehicles belonging to a nearby bread factory named Annour Bread.
The source relayed that the insurgents faced resistance from vigilante members and special forces, which forced them to retreat. Despite the efforts to fend off the attackers, the vigilante camp, the bread factory vehicles, and sections of the government lodge were damaged or destroyed.
An anonymous security source confirmed that one vigilante sustained injuries during the attack. Prior to the assault, security personnel had been conducting patrols and clearing the streets based on intelligence reports indicating a possible infiltration by insurgents in the area.
The attack was confirmed by DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, Public Relations Officer of the Yobe State Police Command. Abdulkarim reported that the insurgents approached in large numbers and began firing indiscriminately upon entering the town.
Captain Shehu Muhammad, Assistant Director of the Public Relations Unit for Operation Lafiya Dole Sector 2 in Damaturu, also verified the incident to journalists. He noted that troops successfully thwarted the attack and engaged the insurgents, preventing further casualties.
This assault adds to the ongoing security challenges in the region, as the local community and security forces continue to grapple with the persistent threat of insurgent attacks.
