In a groundbreaking development for the golfing world, the Nigeria Golf Federation (NGF), led by its President Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, recently hosted Africa’s first-ever indoor golf championship. The event took place over the weekend at the Golf and Health Signature in Abuja, attracting no fewer than 150 female golfers from various golf clubs across the city.
This landmark championship is celebrated as a historic achievement for Nigeria, marking the first time an indoor golf and short game event of this magnitude has been held on the continent. The initiative underscores Nigeria’s commitment to leading the way in the advancement of golf in Africa.
In his address at the event, NGF President Otunba Runsewe expressed his pride in Nigeria’s pioneering efforts. “I am immensely delighted to witness Nigeria make yet another first in the realm of golf. The indoor golf and short game facilities we have unveiled here are unprecedented in Africa,” he stated. Runsewe emphasized the importance of Nigeria taking the lead in the development of golf, citing the example of other advanced nations that have grown the sport through early and innovative initiatives.
The indoor golf championship is not just a one-time event but a strategic move to foster the growth and development of golf in Nigeria. The Golf and Health Signature facility is envisioned as a hub for nurturing young talent, providing them with the necessary tools and environment to excel in the sport and represent Nigeria on the global stage.
Runsewe elaborated on the importance of the facility, explaining that it allows young players to start their journey with short games before advancing to full courses. “Ideally, children aged 10 to 12 should begin with short games before progressing to 18-hole courses. This approach ensures they develop their skills progressively,” he said.
The NGF President highlighted that the championship served as an introduction to indoor golf and short games for over 90% of the participating ladies, marking a significant milestone in their golfing journey. He described the event as a historic and monumental achievement for Nigeria and hinted at more developments to come.
On the sidelines of the championship, Ekanem Ekwueme, former President of the Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria and AACT Trustee for West & Central Africa, praised the facility and its potential. “The indoor golf course allows for year-round play and provides golfers with a simulation of various international courses. This is invaluable for our players, especially as we prepare for upcoming tournaments like the All Africa Challenge Trophy in Morocco,” Ekwueme noted.
The championship not only showcased Nigeria’s innovation in the sport but also set a new standard for indoor golf facilities across Africa.
