Sokoto Governor Approves Payment of New N70,000 Minimum Wage to Civil Servants
Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has announced the commencement of the payment of the new N70,000 minimum wage to civil servants in the state, effective today. This means that state workers will receive the new wage with their January salaries.
A statement from the Governor’s office, signed by Mr. Abubakar Bawa, the Chief Press Secretary, confirmed that the payment will cover both state civil servants and local government staff across Sokoto State.
The new minimum wage is in line with the national policy approved by the federal government and follows a promise made by Governor Aliyu. He expressed his expectations that civil servants in the state would show a renewed commitment and professionalism in their duties in return for the government’s gesture.
“With the commencement of the payment of this new national minimum wage, we expect a renewed commitment, hard work, punctuality, and above all, seriousness from our civil servants,” Governor Aliyu said.
The governor also assured that the administration would continue to prioritize workers by ensuring timely salary payments. He reiterated that salaries would be paid between the 19th and 22nd of every month, a significant improvement from the previous administration, which left workers uncertain about salary payment dates, sometimes delaying them by up to 50 days.
Under the current administration, workers now receive their salaries within a more predictable timeline, between the 19th and 22nd of each month. Additionally, the government has taken steps to clear the backlog of unpaid gratuities for retirees, allocating N500 million monthly for this purpose. An additional N300 million has been set aside monthly to cover gratuities for retirees from 2023 onwards.
Governor Aliyu’s administration aims to ensure that by the end of its tenure, no civil servant in Sokoto State will be owed any gratuity.
