Obasanjo Reveals Attempt to Undermine $280 Million Telecom Deal
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo disclosed how retired General Abdulsalami Abubakar nearly derailed a major telecommunications deal valued at $280 million.
Obasanjo, speaking at the launch of the book *‘The Catalyst: Nigerian ICT Evolution through a Journalist’s Lens’* by former Editor of The PUNCH Newspapers, Dayo Oketola, in Lagos, recounted that during Nigeria’s transition from landline to mobile telephony, there was an attempt to award the contract for a fraction of its worth—$3 million—to friends of Abubakar.
Obasanjo intervened by proposing an auction for the contract, which ultimately resulted in a sale for $280 million. This move not only secured a better deal but also introduced competition among telecommunications companies, including MTN, Glo, and Airtel (formerly Econet).
He emphasized the importance of creating a conducive environment for investment, reflecting on how similar opportunities could still be harnessed if honesty and character are upheld in governance.
The event also honored Oketola’s contributions to journalism, with Nigerian Guild of Editors President Eze Anaba praising his dedication and effort in writing the book amidst a demanding editorial career.
Notable attendees included Minister of Information Alhaji Mohammed Idris (represented by Gbenga Omotoso), former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and other distinguished figures from the journalism and media sectors.
