In a devastating incident on September 8, 2024, a petrol tanker explosion in Niger State has resulted in the deaths of at least 100 people and the destruction of more than 50 cattle. The explosion occurred on the Lapai-Agaie road in Dendo community, Agaie Local Government Area.
According to initial reports, a petrol tanker loaded with gasoline collided with a trailer truck carrying passengers and cattle. The collision led to a massive explosion that engulfed several vehicles, including a crane truck and a pickup van. The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) confirmed that 30 deaths have been verified, while the rescue operation continues.
Abubakar Agaie, a local villager, reported that the intensity of the fire made it difficult for rescuers to approach the affected vehicles, leading to significant loss of life and property. The rescue team is still working to locate additional victims trapped inside the vehicles.
Governor Mohammed Bago of Niger State has expressed profound sorrow over the incident, urging residents to remain calm and adhere to road safety regulations. In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, the governor conveyed his condolences to the victims’ families and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.
