Benin Republic Captain Steve Mounie Assures Readiness for Super Eagles Clash

As the highly anticipated 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers approach, Benin Republic captain Steve Mounie has expressed his team’s full preparedness for their encounter against Nigeria’s Super Eagles. The match, scheduled for September 7, 2024, will take place at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, with kickoff set for 5 p.m. local time.

Benin Republic secured a notable 2-1 victory over Nigeria in their previous encounter in June, and the Super Eagles are eager for redemption. Mounie, speaking at a press conference in Uyo on Friday, emphasized his team’s determination to repeat their success.

“At this moment, our team spirit is incredibly strong and resilient,” Mounie asserted. “We are not ones to give up easily. Together, we will display unity on the field, which will be crucial in tomorrow’s game.”

He further stressed, “It won’t matter who scores or provides the assist. The primary objective tomorrow is to attain a positive result.”

On the other side, Super Eagles winger Moses Simon, who recently earned the French Ligue 1 Player of the Month award, highlighted the importance of securing a victory over Benin Republic. The Super Eagles have faced challenges since their impressive performance in the 2023 AFCON final, managing only one win in their last five games.

Simon conveyed the team’s commitment to turning their fortunes around. “This is our responsibility. We understand the gravity of the situation. It was disappointing to suffer a 2-1 defeat against them, and we are determined to avoid a similar outcome,” Simon stated.

He added, “The team is well aware of what is required to secure a victory. Drawing the game is not our goal; we aim to execute our game plan and give our all to emerge victorious, bringing joy to Nigerians.”

With both teams showing strong determination, the match promises to be a thrilling contest, as the Super Eagles seek to avenge their previous defeat and Benin Republic aims to maintain their winning momentum.
