The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Southwest Zone has voiced strong opposition to the Federal Government’s recent decision to invalidate degrees obtained from higher institutions in the Republic of Benin and Togo from 2017 onwards. This decision impacts over 22,000 Nigerian students, creating widespread concern and uncertainty about their academic and professional futures.
Comrade Alao John, the Zonal Coordinator, along with Comrade Sanni Sulaimon Olamide (Secretary General) and Comrade Bamigboye Peter Oluwadamilola (Public Relations Officer), issued a statement criticizing the government’s move. They argued that this action undermines the students’ academic achievements and places them in a precarious position, potentially leading to increased frustration and unrest.
They acknowledged the government’s concerns about substandard institutions and academic fraud but argued that a blanket ban is unfair and discriminatory. The group urged the government to reconsider this decision, suggesting a more targeted approach that reviews institutions on a case-by-case basis and engages in dialogue with affected students.
The NANS leaders emphasized the risk of deepening youth unemployment and insecurity if the situation is not addressed. They called for the government to provide alternatives and solutions to support the students affected by the policy, appealing for a fair and practical resolution that considers the students’ rights and future prospects.
