The Honourable Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Muhammed Matawalle, has expressed deep concern over the ongoing activities of terrorists and bandits terrorizing Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, and Kebbi States. In a statement released on Saturday, Matawalle detailed the federal government’s strategic response to the persistent security challenges in the North West region.
In response to the escalating banditry and terrorism, Matawalle has directed the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and other military chiefs to relocate to Sokoto, the headquarters of the General Officer Commanding (GOC) for the North West, which oversees Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, and Kebbi States. This move is part of a broader effort to intensify operations against criminal elements, particularly targeting the notorious bandit leader Bello Turji and his gang.
“The Honourable Minister of State has emphasized that this strategic deployment underscores the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment to restoring peace and security in the region,” said the Director of Information and Public Relations, Henshaw Ogubike Minor. “While in the North West, the military leaders will supervise operations to ensure that Bello Turji and his bandits are flushed out.”
The statement also addressed recent incidents involving bandits, including a video circulated by the criminals showing a Nigerian military armoured vehicle stuck in a water-logged area. The video, recorded in Kwashabawa, Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State, showed bandits celebrating the situation, highlighting the urgency of the government’s response.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been providing significant support to the Armed Forces of Nigeria, and the federal government is committed to deploying all necessary resources to combat these threats. Matawalle stressed that the time is now to intensify efforts to dismantle the bandits’ bases and restore peace.
Matawalle also called on the residents of Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, and Kebbi States to remain vigilant and cooperate with security forces. “The Federal Government is deeply concerned about the persistent threat posed by banditry and terrorism in the North West,” he stated. “We must act decisively to protect our communities and ensure the safety and well-being of all Nigerians.”
The Minister assured that he, along with the CDS and other military chiefs, will be on the ground in the North West, leading the security operations against the criminals. He reiterated the federal government’s resolve to protect lives and properties, emphasizing that the security and well-being of the people remain the top priority.
As the federal government ramps up its efforts to combat banditry and terrorism, the coordination between military and local communities is seen as crucial in achieving lasting peace in the North West region.
