The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the promotion of eight Commissioners of Police to the rank of Assistant Inspectors General of Police. This move is part of a broader promotion exercise that elevated 684 officers within the force to their next ranks.
The promotion was confirmed at the PSC’s first Plenary Meeting of the new Board, which took place on August 30, 2024. According to a statement released by the PSC’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani, the meeting was chaired by the Commission’s Chairman, retired DIG Hashimu Argungu, and attended by DIG Taiwo Lakanu, retired, and Chief Onyemuche Nnamani, Secretary to the Commission.
In addition to the eight officers promoted to Assistant Inspectors General, the following promotions were made:
- 15 Deputy Commissioners of Police were elevated to Commissioners of Police.
- 52 Chief Superintendents of Police were promoted to Assistant Commissioners of Police.
- 525 Superintendents of Police were advanced to Chief Superintendents of Police.
- 84 Deputy Superintendents of Police were promoted to Superintendents of Police.
The eight Commissioners of Police promoted to Assistant Inspectors General are:

- CP Mohammed Bala Labbo, CP Communication DICT, Force Headquarters Abuja
The PSC’s statement noted that the promotions were based on merit, with officers required to undergo assessments and examinations as part of the promotion process. This measure aligns with the Public Service Rules, which mandate formal examinations for federal civil and public servants.

PSC Chairman, DIG Argungu, emphasized that future promotions within the police force will be strictly merit-based and that the PSC will not delay the promotion of deserving officers. He assured that the commission is committed to ensuring a transparent and predictable promotion process.
The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has been notified of the approvals for necessary actions and implementation of the new promotions.
