Tragedy struck in the early hours of Friday when a fire broke out at the Lagos State Government Staff Quarters located on Odunsanmi Street, off WEMPCO Road in the Ogba area of Lagos. The fire, which started around 2:20 a.m., severely damaged a section of the two-story building, causing significant property loss.
The blaze primarily affected one of the two-bedroom apartments in Flat 5 of Block 21, a three-story building with 16 two-bedroom flats. According to a preliminary investigation by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the fire originated from an electrical surge in the children’s bedroom.
Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyitolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, confirmed that the fire completely destroyed the children’s bedroom, resulting in the loss of properties worth millions of naira. Fortunately, no lives were lost, and no injuries were reported.
“The prompt and coordinated efforts of the Agency’s Lagos Response Team (LRT), the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service ensured that the fire was quickly contained and extinguished,” Dr. Oke-Osanyitolu stated. He also mentioned that the victims and other residents of the building were educated on the proper use of electrical appliances to prevent future incidents.
As of 5:00 a.m., emergency response teams, including personnel from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASEMA, and the Nigerian Police, were still on the scene, ensuring that the situation was completely under control.
