Nigeria and Niger have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening their security partnership, despite recent tensions involving Niger’s withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The bilateral meeting between the two nations’ defense chiefs focused on enhancing their long-standing relationship and exploring ways to bolster security cooperation. Both parties acknowledged the critical role of dialogue and collaboration in addressing shared security challenges and strengthening their strategic partnership.
A key aspect of the discussion was the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), a regional initiative aimed at combating terrorism and ensuring stability. Niger has expressed its readiness to resume active participation in the MNJTF, highlighting its commitment to regional security.
The defense chiefs also addressed the issue of small arms proliferation, recognizing its impact on regional instability. They agreed to intensify efforts to curb the illicit flow of weapons, enhance border security, and support regional and international initiatives to control and reduce the spread of these arms.
Additionally, it was agreed that advisory groups from both countries would be established to address mutual concerns and sustain communication. The Chief of Staff of the Nigerien Armed Forces accepted an invitation to visit Nigeria to finalize cooperation modalities and enhance bilateral relations.
The Nigerian Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) also paid a courtesy call on Niger’s Deputy Minister of National Defence, General Sani Kache, further reinforcing the commitment to collaborative efforts and regional stability.
