Funke Akindele Vs Toyin Abraham: Rivalry, Reputation, And The Reality Of Nollywood Competition

The Nigerian movie industry, Nollywood, has over the years been characterized by feuds, rivalries, fallouts, and betrayals, among other challenges. However, beyond these issues, the industry has successfully placed Nigeria on the global map. Recent research positions Nollywood as the second-largest film industry in the world by volume of production, as well as one of Africa’s most powerful cultural exports.

While the drama within the industry has become a source of concern for many movie lovers, Nollywood continues to thrive. It dominates cinemas locally and internationally, attracts large audiences on streaming platforms such as Netflix and YouTube, and serves as a significant contributor to the economy.

Consequently, no matter how much good the industry achieves, the negative aspects often overshadow it. This is evident in the recent ruckus between Nollywood’s record-breaking heavyweights, Toyin Abraham and Funke Akindele. These Yoruba actresses, who have evolved into producers, directors, and all-round filmmakers, have consistently dominated the box office since 2017. Their films have generated billions in revenue over the years, earning them the title of “box office queens.”

Despite their remarkable success, the duo have been involved in a widely discussed feud that has resurfaced repeatedly over the years.

While many may not know the root cause of their rift, their intense competition for dominance is clearly a contributing factor.

Looking closer, the concept of “collaboration over competition” has been widely promoted by industry stakeholders beyond Nollywood. However, in reality, it appears largely absent within the film industry. Many individuals, including insiders, have repeatedly criticized the “fakery,” unhealthy rivalry, and intense competition that have become commonplace, often leading to hostility among key players.

For Funke Akindele and Toyin Abraham, the factors behind their ongoing rivalry are not far-fetched. Their consistent dominance at the box office, with Akindele often leading and Abraham closely trailing, has intensified competition between them. Their unresolved differences are fueled by industry gossip, fanbase rivalry, and professional competition. Tensions notably escalated around 2021 following the release of Toyin Abraham’s The Ghost and the Tout Too.

Although the two have rarely had direct public confrontations, their visible distance at events, public gatherings, and collaborative projects speaks volumes about their strained relationship.

On Sunday, March 29, however, events took a dramatic turn at the premiere of Iyabo Ojo’s ‘The Return of Arinzo’, a sequel to her 2013 action-thriller. A viral clip from the event showed Toyin Abraham approaching to greet colleagues, including Iyabo Ojo and Mercy Aigbe, who were seated at the same table as Funke Akindele. Akindele, however, appeared to ignore the greeting and gave what many interpreted as a cold stare.

This moment has since sparked widespread conversation about relationships within Nollywood. The incident also highlighted the possibility that many industry figures may not be in good terms, choosing instead to maintain distance as a coping mechanism. Beyond the focus on Akindele and Abraham, the event further reinforced ongoing discussions about perceived “fakery” within the industry.

The situation has fueled debates among fans, with supporters of both actresses comparing their projects over the years in attempts to undermine the other. This has, in turn, intensified online disagreements.

Although rivalry is not uncommon in the entertainment industry, many neutral observers believe that the tension between the two actresses should not escalate to such levels.

The reality of this is that: interestingly, despite the controversy surrounding the premiere, both actresses have remained focused on promoting their respective projects. Funke Akindele continues to promote her record-breaking December cinema release ‘Behind The Scenes’, which became available on Netflix from April 3, 2026. Toyin Abraham, on the other hand, has been actively promoting her film ‘Love Between Two Altars’, which is currently streaming on YouTube.

This dedication reflects the work ethic that has defined their success. Their ability to stay focused, despite distractions, not only cements their status as record breakers but also as pacesetters in the industry.

Amid their rivalry, there is no denying that their achievements serve as a benchmark for aspiring actors. There is much to learn from their strategies, particularly in how they build anticipation and position their films before release.
