Nigeria has been placed in a challenging Group C for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, alongside Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania. The tournament will take place from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.
This group will test Nigeria’s mettle, with Tunisia being their most familiar opponent. The two teams met in the 2021 AFCON round of 16, where Tunisia eliminated Nigeria. Tunisia, who won the tournament in 2024 on home soil, will pose a significant challenge. Uganda, appearing in their eighth tournament, and Tanzania, with just three previous appearances, will also be formidable but less experienced in comparison to Nigeria and Tunisia.
Nigeria, the most successful team in AFCON history with three titles (1980, 1994, 2013), will be looking for their 21st appearance at the continental competition. They hold a remarkable 16 medals from 20 appearances, including five runners-up finishes and eight bronze medals. Nigeria’s last AFCON appearance saw them lose 2-1 to Ivory Coast in the 2023 final.
Other groups in the tournament feature a variety of strong teams, with Morocco in Group A alongside Mali, Zambia, and Comoros, and defending champions Ivory Coast in Group F with Cameroon, Gabon, and Mozambique. Notable teams like Egypt, Senegal, and Algeria will also be competing in different groups.
In terms of logistics, six Moroccan cities have been selected as venues for the competition: Rabat, Casablanca, Agadir, Marrakech, Fes, and Tangier. Rabat will host four stadiums, including the 69,500-capacity Complexe Sportif Prince Moulay Abdellah, while other notable stadiums include the Grand Stade de Marrakech and the Grand Stade de Tanger, which can accommodate 75,000 spectators.
