The Nigerian Army’s 6 Division, in collaboration with other security agencies, has made significant strides in combating illegal refining activities in Rivers and Bayelsa states. According to a statement by the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, Lt. Col. Jonah Danjuma, the troops have destroyed approximately 115 illegal refining sites and 66 boats, while also arresting 22 suspects involved in these illicit operations.
In addition to these arrests, the army has recovered 27 stolen pipes, four pumping machines, and clamped down on five illegal connections used by the suspects to siphon crude oil. Over 170,000 liters of stolen products and other ancillary items were confiscated during these operations.
Danjuma provided a detailed breakdown of the operations, highlighting the army’s efforts in tightening the noose on illegal refinery activities and associated crimes in the Niger Delta Region. In Bayelsa State, operations conducted in areas such as Ibidi, Twon Brass, and Southern Ijaw Local Government Area (LGA) resulted in the destruction of several illegal refining sites and the confiscation of large quantities of stolen refined products and crude oil.
Similarly, in Rivers State, the army’s operations at the notorious Imo River led to the destruction of 79 illegal refining sites and the recovery of over 40,000 liters of stolen products. Additionally, acting on credible intelligence, troops arrested four suspects at an installation owned by Webster Global Ventures Limited in Degema LGA.
These actions are part of a broader effort by the Nigerian Army to combat illegal artisanal refinery activities and economic sabotage in the Niger Delta, ensuring the security and stability of the region.
